Grand Canyon Rainbow

Hello again readers and welcome back! In the middle of August we took a small vacation out to the greater Las Vegas area, which included a day trip to Grand Canyon National Park. It was the first time that I visited the park since I visited with my family when I was young. However, that trip was not nearly as fun as I would have liked it to be, as the entire trip I was sick with mononucleosis. This year another trip out there finally became a reality, and I was not fighting a terrible infection the whole time!

This photo was taken right outside of Grand Canyon Village at the South Rim. We were met with a pop up rain shower right after we landed from our short flight to the Grand Canyon, and during the drive from the airport it mostly cleared up. This shot was totally unexpected, as I was taking photos of the view from the overlook with the wide angle lens, and Jill pointed out there was a rainbow that was visible on the right side of the view. Sure, it would have been awesome to catch a much more prominent rainbow, but hey, a small bit of a rainbow is better than no rainbow!

2017 Solar Eclipse

Good afternoon readers and welcome back! Hopefully you got to see at least some, if not all, of the solar eclipse today if you live in the United States! I am posting two photos, one is a mixed composition of clouds and the sun, and the other is when we had maximum coverage here in Millersville.

Cloudy Eclipse


I used two photos to compose this shot, because the sun is so bright that properly capturing the sharpness of the light means the entire rest of the photo is pretty much dark. I really like how this photo came out and I wish that it would have been cloudy during our peak coverage too, as it made a much better picture I think.


Fullest Coverage

This photo is the maximum coverage here in Millersville, we had about 82% if I recall correctly, which is not bad, but it is nowhere near as cool as being along the path of the total eclipse!

Portland Head Lighthouse, facing south

Hello again readers and welcome back!! The subject of today's photo comes from a journey to Portland, Maine to get some photos of the Portland Head Light lighthouse, which is actually located just outside of Portland in Cape Elizabeth. According to my Uber driver, as well as some online research before heading up there, the lighthouse is the most photographed scene in all of Maine. 


I kept a close on eye on the weather on Thursday, the day before the trip, due to a storm that was passing through the area. It started with snow, changed to freezing rain, changed to rain, and then changed back to snow. The official total of the snowfall at the Portland Jetport was 7.7". I was a little concerned that it might be difficult to get from the airport to the lighthouse, but the roads were in really good shape and surprisingly there were quite a few people at the lighthouse as well. At least some of them had the same idea and tried to get some snowfall photos of the lighthouse!


This photo was taken at the top corner of one of the cliffs overlooking the lighthouse, facing south. The clouds in the southern sky were much better looking than the clouds facing north, although had I arrived earlier it probably would have been a great sky for photographs all around. I definitely want to visit the area again and get more photos of the area, as there are quite a few lighthouses in and around Portland, plus plenty of other photo opportunities as well. There will definitely be more photos to come from this trip!

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

Hello again readers and welcome back!! The subject of today's photo comes from a journey to Sunset Cliffs Natural Park during a recent trip to San Diego, California. I did not have a chance to visit Sunset Cliffs during my previous visit to San Diego, and despite the sunset not being as spectacular as I had hoped, I still managed to get some pretty good photos of, all in all, a pretty underwhelming sunset. 

When we left the hotel to start the short drive out there, it was sunny with some clouds and I thought we would have some really good shots. As we got closer to the park it got more and more overcast and we did not get to witness the amazing sunset that we had hoped for. I think that just means we have to make more trips out to San Diego more often!

Creepy Room

Hello again readers, and welcome back! The subject of today's photo is the room of a small child, located within the Bellamy Mansion Museum in Wilmington, North Carolina. We stopped by the museum during our vacation back in July and took the tour. The tour was interesting, but the temperatures were in the mid 90s, with heat indexes well over 100 degrees, so it got really warm in the home very quickly. I broke off from the main tour group and wandered around the home on my own to take photos. All of the rooms have been restored and have a central underlying theme, but this room was, in my opinion, the best photographic opportunity out of all of them. It kind of reminded me of a scene out of a mystery or horror movie, where the stroller will suddenly start to move on it's own, or the bed would levitate, or something else that was just unnatural.

I took a series of three bracketed photos from the corner of the room with the 24mm lens (rented from Borrow Lenses!) and did some retouching in Photoshop to bring out how I wanted the room to "look". I hope you enjoy it!

Pelican Landing Post

Hello again readers! We spent the first part of July on vacation in Carolina Beach, North Carolina. I had a chance to take more beach pictures than I have in previous years and hope to be able to post them in the coming weeks.

This particular shot captures a post that I believe says "Pelican Landing", a lifeguard tower, a couple of beach goers setting up an umbrella, a lifeguard on an ATV, a couple of gulls, and a dragonfly (among other aspects). Of course, looking beyond all of that is the ocean and sand, which honestly is one of the nicest parts of vacation. I took this from a tripod fairly low to the ground and although I did take bracketed shots, I liked everything that was happening in this photo and just processed it with -2 and +2 using Digital Photo Professional. I then used Photomatix to create the HDR and the Nik tools to clean it up a bit.

After the Storm

The subject of today's post is the interesting cloud formation and sky coloring that occurred after a line of thunderstorms went through Maryland on June 23, 2015. It dropped quite a bit of rain and there was a LOT of thunder and lightning. When it all cleared up though, it left this awesome looking scene!

Resident red shouldered hawk

Hello again readers!! The subject of today's photo post is a red shouldered hawk, which has taken up residence at the top of a large pine tree directly across from our home.  While we are by no means official avian experts, it seems that there is a male and a female who take turns in a very large nest at the top of the tree. We have been doing research as much as possible to try to figure out if there are baby hawks in the nest, but as of yet we have not been able to confirm whether there are baby hawks or not.  We have even contemplated procuring a drone for a look into the nest, as it is about 100 feet off of the ground, but we don't want to hawk(s) to injure itself in the event that it would attack the drone, not to mention the cost of fixing the drone if it were to be attacked.

The hawk has drawn a lot of attentions from black birds (probably either grackles or starlings) who are very noisy when the hawk is perched in a branch. I was hopeful that the hawk was going to smack one of the black birds with the branch it was holding in its beak, but after holding onto it for about two minutes it just let it go and it kind of pinballed its way down the tree finally coming to rest on the ground. It has been very interesting and awe inspiring to be able to see such large birds so close over the past few months. Hopefully there are some baby hawks (which would be some GREAT photos) but, more importantly, hopefully they move in and reuse the nest in the coming years!

Snowy Sunrise

Hello again readers!! By my unofficial calculation, we got about 8 inches of snow yesterday in Millersville, which I believe is the highest snowfall total since moving up here back in 2011. We also set a new record low this morning but with all of the snow and clear skies, cold temperatures surely were not going to hinder me trying to get a couple of good photos!


I took this picture from our front yard looking East. It took me a few minutes to position to tripod just right  to capture the shot that I wanted. I also had to wait for the sun to be centered perfectly between the "V" in the trunk. I took this shot with my 17-40mm lens. I took a series of three bracketed shots at f/22, and merged them using Photomatix Pro and did some additional editing in Photoshop Creative Cloud.

Comet Lovejoy (C/2014 Q2) Hunting

Hello again readers! As you probably know my nearly two year old post on Comet PANSTARRS, I enjoy the challenge of trying to see comets, especially when they are supposed to be bright enough to be seen by the naked eye.

Over the past few days I have been trying to see Comet Lovejoy (C/2014 Q2) from our backyard, but did not have any luck. Although the temperature outside is cold (right now it is about 15° Fahrenheit) I decided to try to capture some shots of the comet with my camera because I was not able to see it with my eyes alone or with binoculars, but I think that may have been because I was looking too close to Orion (which is a great frame of reference, but all of the photos I saw online made it seem like it was closer to Orion than it actually is).

I took these shots with my 70-300mm lens, and I included what I think is the best "raw" shot, as well as a shot with Orion's belt and sword labeled, as well as the comet, and then an enlarged version of the comet only. The length of the exposure caused some star trails, but out of the shots that I managed to take before I got too cold, I think this one came out the best.

Hopefully you have clear, dark skies and you are able to see the comet in the coming days. I hope the frame of reference helps too, and be sure to look farther away from Orion than you would expect!

Another Riverwalk Christmas

Hello again readers! It is kind of hard to believe that Christmas is only ten days away! I hope all of your shopping is done (or mostly done, at least)!

This is a photo that I took back in November of 2011 on the Riverwalk in San Antonio. This was the first year that they changed from the horrible red lights to the more colorful (and, in my opinion, better looking) LED lights.

This photo was taken just outside of La Paloma, which is a Mexican restaurant. It was taken over three years ago, but I think that I waited for about 15 minutes to get a shot with minimal pedestrian traffic as well as not having any of the water taxi boat lights in the shot. If you look closely under the bridge you can also see the Texas flag colored table canopies from The Republic of Texas Restaurant as well!

Partly Cloudy Milky Way

This photo was taken while in vacation this past July in Emerald Isle, North Carolina. We stayed in Emerald Isle for a week and during the entire week this was the only day that was decent enough to attempt to get a couple of night time shots with the Milky Way. As we were shooting more and more clouds seemed to appear and this was one of the last shots that we took before calling it a night.

I particularly like this shot because it captured the rising moon which makes the lower left portion of the shot much brighter than the rest of the photo. I used some of the lens correction settings in Canon's Digital Photo Professional to try to reduce the "fisheye" appearance and ended up creating a slightly warped effect with the stars. Rather than trying to reduce that effect I decided to keep it and ended up with the following photo.

I didn't get as many good shots of the Milky Way as I had hoped due to the clouds and am still working on going through all of the photos to see if there is another shot that I might post, but I am quite pleased with how this photo came out and wanted to share it. I hope that you enjoy it!

Rise of Tuffy

This photo was taken at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, Maryland this past weekend. The elephants playing in the pool were, by far, the highlight of this particular visit. Although it was not terribly hot outside, all four of the elephants (Felix, Anna, Samson, and Tuffy) enjoyed playing in the pool for about an hour. Felix, Anna, and Samson were contained in the pool on the right and Tuffy was all alone in the pool on the left. One of the keepers was keeping an eye on the elephants to ensure that the elephant's play time did not escalate to something more hostile, especially between Felix and Samson. Chomp!

The subject of today's post is a crocodile from the Cape Fear Serpentarium in Wilmington, North Carolina. The Serpentarium is home to a wide array of animals but primarily features snakes, including some rare and very deadly snakes. The snakes are rated by a "skull" system in to inform visitors on how deadly the snake is. One of the snakes (the name of the species escapes me right now) had some very exquisite coloring to it and my girlfriend asked if we could bring it home "because it only had three and a half skulls" My answer, of course, was no. :)


The crocodile in this photograph stood very still, but you can see some blurring in the lower neck where the crocodile moved and breathed during the time that was needed to expose this shot. I tried my best to remove all of the elements of the protective glass, but you can see the reflection of the multicolored lights in the crocodile's eye (I left that in because I think it looks pretty neat!).


If you are in the Wilmington, North Carolina area I highly recommend paying the Serpentarium a visit. There are not many places where you can see exotic snakes such as the Bushmaster in the U.S., and each snake animal on display has a good deal of information printed on display plaques so you can learn more about them. You can even see some of the staff feed the snakes if you are so inclined!

Twisted Trees

Hello again! I finally had some time to work on a photo that I took last year while on vacation in North Carolina. The subjects of this shot are a grove of very twisted and battered oak trees that line the beach just outside of Fort Fisher (near Kure Beach), North Carolina. I saw these trees the previous year on the way to the aquarium (located to the south of the grove) and waited an entire year to try to get a good set of bracketed photos, then waited almost another year to process the photos, but I think the result was DEFINITELY worth the wait! If these trees could talk, they would likely tell the story of being battered almost continually by (at least) ocean winds, hurricanes, wind-swept sand, and rain.

I took this shot with my 17-40mm lens and tried to zoom in so that the trees themselves were all in the photo. I had to do a little retouching on one side to remove a pesky street sign, and used the Topaz DeNoise and the Nik tool collection in Adobe Photoshop Creative Commons.

Riverwalk Christmas, Looking West, in 2011

Hello, Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays!

This is a photo that I took back in November of 2011 after the city of San Antonio first changed the Riverwalk decorations from the old style Christmas lights to the newer LED lights. I stood in the spot on the Riverwalk for about 15 minutes waiting for the right moment to be able to take the bracketed shots (I used -1, 0, and +1 to get this shot) without any people walking through the scene. I think it was definitely well worth the wait!

The photo was taken near the Omni Del Mansion Del Rio (it is the wall on the right side of the photo). You can see one of the bridges that crosses the Riverwalk in the distance, as well as Rita's (and sister restaurant Pizzaritas) on the left side of the photo. I used the newest version of Photomatix to process this shot and honestly, I had to do very little after processing in Photoshop. So if you need a Christmas gift for the photographer in your life, I would recommend Photomatix as it is currently on sale, and it is a great deal!

Chincoteague Island Sunset

Today's photo was taken at the end of a pier on Chincoteague Island, Virginia in July of this year during a weekend trip to the beach. The pier was a shared pier between the hotel that we stayed at and a set of vacation homes. This was, by far, the best sunset of the entire trip, and was worth waiting for (we also managed to get in some fishing waiting for the sunset as well, just in case it was not as spectacular as I was hoping for!).

The shot is a combination of a -2, 0, and +2 bracketed exposure, with some extra work done on the sky (color and saturation) and water (desaturation and smoothing). The shot was taken looking directly west from the pier, and is looking over an inlet between Chincoteague Island and Wallops Island, from where some NASA and private sector rockets, like Space X, have been launched since the end of the space shuttle missions from Florida.

Knoebels Grove at Night

Today's post contains two photos that I took last year during a visit to Knoebels Grove in Elysburg, Pennsylvania. I posted a few pictures from the trip last year, but have not had a chance to share these photos yet.

The first photo is of the "Downdraft" ride, it is located along what (many years ago) used to be the main road that ran past and through Knoebels and the very large Crystal Pool. The ride rises, spins, and twists riders in various directions. I wondered exactly how an early evening, long exposure shot (two seconds) would come out and I got pretty lucky with how it turned out. I also got lucky that the young girl in the foreground stayed fairly still throughout the duration of the shot!

Downdraft



The second photo is a shot of one of my favorite rides at the park from when I was young, the Paratrooper. This ride spins riders in a large circle after lifting into the air. It is a fairly basic, simple ride but it is a very enjoyable one! I used a mixture of black and white and color processing in this photo in an effort to make the "center" of the ride stand out more than normal

Natural Window

Hello again! I promise you that my blog has not been forgotten. I have not had anywhere NEAR the time that I would like to devote to my photography hobby and I am making a resolution to attempt to make at least one blog post a week. It is a goal that I believe I can achieve and I would like to thank all of my readers for taking the time from their busy schedules to stop by my little slice of the internet and read my ramblings and view the photos that I have taken!

With that being said, hopefully you all have had a chance to see Comet PANSTARRS by now! If you have not, you can view the photos from my Comet PANSTARRS post. (Also, thanks to WBFF FOX 45 Morning Meteorologist Jonathan Myers, one of my photos and the blog was even seen on the FOX 45 morning news cast!)  I am hoping the weather cooperates and in early April I have a chance to get some photos of the comet near the Andromeda Galaxy, but we shall see.  It has been quite a month so far with a lot of great experiences, ranging from baby bears at the Plumpton Park Zoo, to my photo being on the cover of the book "The Church", and briefly gracing the FOX morning news (check out my Facebook Fan Page for that)!

But enough of all of that and let us move on to discussing this photo.  This shot was another one taken at the Japanese Tea Garden in San Antonio, Texas in late November 2011, just a few days before moving to the East Coast.  I have been debating how I was going to process this shot for awhile.  I was happy with the shot and the brackets, but I was unsure of exactly what I was looking for in the final result.  I ultimately decided on blurring and desaturating the edges of the photo while keeping the middle ("window") portion sharp and clear.  I decided that it looked sort of window-esque, and I edited the photo to try to highlight and accentuate the presence of a natural window in the setting and am pretty satisfied with the result.

All Your Baby Bears Are Belong To Us (except, not really at all)

Hopefully the blog post caught your attention a bit and you are thinking exactly what I had hoped you would be thinking..is there a sequel to Zero Wing that involves baby bears? Sadly, no, that is not the case (hey Nintendo, that would be an awesome idea though!) instead the blog title was thought up by my girlfriend Jill, who accompanied me today on a trip up to Plumpton Park Zoo in Rising Sun, Maryland.  We became Platinum members of the zoo this past week after seeing the two European Brown Bear Cubs Frankie and Ringo on the morning news this past week.  Being a Platinum member at the zoo has a TON of benefits, but perhaps the best benefit is the ability to take a behind the scenes tour with a staff member that allows you to see a lot of the animals much closer than you could at probably any other zoo (I cannot speak from experience on that, however). During the tour (led by Michelle, who was great!!) we got to meet (among other animals) a giraffe, a porcupine, a fox, two tigers, timber wolves, and we also got to see Michelle (our tour guide) interact with many of the animals as well (this was probably the only time that I will ever get a chance to see a European Brown Bear give upside down bear kisses to another human being!)  All of the photos of the other animals were taken by Jill (as my arm is still in a sling after rotator cuff/bicep tendon surgery) but the baby bear photos were taken with my Canon S100 Point and Shoot.  We will be posting photos of the other animals (including some really unique shots of tigers) in the very near future, so be sure to check back for those photos!

But, of course the absolute highlight of the tour were the bear cubs Frankie and Ringo.  The cubs were born on 8 January 2013 and are quite possibly the cutest animals that I have ever seen.  They already have some pretty big claws and try to suckle on your hand and make a noise that resembles purring.  They are already pretty adept at climbing and even took a nap in the middle of a petting time!

I want to thank the staff at the zoo for taking the time to give us the tour today and making the bears available to Jill and me for some photos (and of course some cuddle and play time).  If there is an influx of Platinum Level members the staff may not be able to schedule time for all of the new members to see the cubs but a membership is a great way to support a great cause and (potentially) have a once in a lifetime opportunity to see and pet European Brown Bear Cubs!
